02 Jan18/Tuesday

In its New Year greeting to Pakistan President Trump tweeted

“The United States has foolishly given Pakistan more than $33 billion in aid over the last 15 years, and they have given us nothing but lies & deceit, thinking of our leaders as fools”.

“No more!” Trump’s tweet was posted at 5.42 pm IST on Monday, and retweeted by more than 84 K Twitter accounts and liked by more than 249 K at the time of this post.

While Afghanistan cheered at Trump’s tough talk against Pakistan, which it accuses of sponsoring terrorist attacks on Afghan soil, Pakistan reacted in expected manner.

Responding to the remarks, Pakistan’s foreign minister Khwaja M Asif tweeted at 6.36 pm IST:

“We will respond to President Trump’s tweet shortly inshallah…will let the world know the truth…difference between facts and fiction.”

Khawaja Asif also responded at an interview on a TV Channel:

“We have already told the U.S. that we will not do more, so Trump’s ‘no more’ does not hold any importance. Pakistan was “ready to publicly provide every detail of the U.S. aid that it has received.”

According to a statement of the U S Embassy, U.S. Ambassador to Pakistan, David Hale was summoned to the Foreign Ministry to discuss the President’s statement said. Pakistan lodged a strongly worded protest and asked for clarification of Trump’s comments.

Afghanistan’s ambassador to the US Hamdullah Mohib tweeted,

“President @realDonaldTrump’s first tweet of 2018. A promising message to Afghans who have suffered at the hands of terrorists based in Pakistan for far too long.”

US Frustration on Pak

Trump’s tweet comes 10 days after US Vice President Mike Pence, during a surprise visit to Afghanistan, said,

“For too long has Pakistan provided safe haven to the Taliban and many terrorist organisations, but those days are over… President Trump has put Pakistan on notice.”

The Presidential tweet also marks a remarkable turnaround from last October when Trump thanked Pakistan for rescuing an American-Canadian family from the Haqqani terror network. However, there is a definite “continuity” in Trump’s approach since his administration unveiled its South Asia strategy last August and National Security Strategy in December.

It was the President’s latest broadside against Pakistan after a speech in August in which he demanded that its leaders crack down on the safe havens enjoyed by Taliban militants fighting U.S.-backed forces in neighbouring Afghanistan. While US charges Pakistan for doing nothing on terror, Pakistan charges US of shifting the blame of US failure in Afghanistan to Pakistan.

Blow-hot – Blow-cold dealing with Pakistan is a clear indication that US is now thoroughly fed up with Pakistan.

In another incident Hafiz Saeed while sharing dais with Palestinian Ambassador, openly announced

“The day Jerusalem (Bait-ul-Muqaddas) becomes the capital of Israel, a caravan of jihad will be launched. Pakistan’s army chief general (Qamar Javed) Bajwa, Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and all leaders of political parties need to unite. Pakistan’s atomic bomb is the asset of ‘Islam’, which should be used to free Jerusalem.”

India’s strong protest led to recall of Palestinian Ambassador Walid Abu Ali. In another reconciliatory gesture, Pakistan Government prohibited Saeed’s organisation named Falah-i-Insaniyat Foundation, from accepting donations.

Now how are Presidential tweet and Hafiz Saeed related?

Pakistan believes that US protests have been instigated by India. So, India needs to be kept under constant hope that Pakistan is trying its level best to curb Saeed’s activities. In January 2017, Saeed was placed under house arrest, only to be released in November. Earlier also the same drama was enacted by Pakistan. Now the latest move by Pakistan to put financial ban on Saeed’s organisation is nothing but another lie and deceit(sic) to appease India in anticipation of lessening American pressure.
