INDIA’S FIRST SHIPMENT OF WHEAT TO REACH AFGHANISTAN VIA IRAN’S CHABAHAR PORT

28 Oct 2017 / Saturday

India’s first shipment of wheat to Afghanistan will reach the war-torn country through the Chabahar Port in Iran, Kabul-based TOLO News has reported, quoting officials from the Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Industries (ACCI). India will send at least 130,000 tons of wheat to Afghanistan in this shipment. Afghan President Ashraf Ghani appreciated India’s move to send wheat to Afghanistan. Afghanistan, a land-locked country, is completely dependent on Pakistan for access to the sea. Pakistan refuses to give India land access to Afghanistan while it permits Afghan trucks access to Wagah border with India. Chabahar port, will bypass Pakistan, limiting Kabul’s dependence on Islamabad for access to the sea. It will boost India’s access to Iran, the key gateway to the International North-South Transport Corridor that has sea, rail and road routes between India, Russia, Iran, Europe and Central Asia. It will counter Chinese presence in the Arabian Sea which China is trying to ensure by building the Gwadar port. From a diplomatic perspective, Chabahar port could be used as a point from where humanitarian operations could be coordinated.

Viewpoint

Humanitarianism lies at the heart of Indian spiritual and cultural values. The recent contributions to HA/DR in the immediate neighbourhood signifY “symbol of friendship”, with a genuine desire to help in distress and a wish to foster friendly relations.
