Strongly reacting to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remarks that Pakistan is the “mothership of terrorism”, Foreign Affairs Advisor to Premier Nawaz Sharif, Mr Sartaj Aziz had accused the Indian leader of “misleading” the BRICS countries over the issue in 2016. Already Pakistan is visibly agitated due to suspension of $300 million reimbursements and serious cuts in US aid and conditional aid of $225 million that was granted by Trump administration recently. The announcement came over a week after President Donald Trump remarked that Pakistan is providing safe havens to terror groups that kill Americans in Afghanistan. He further warned Pakistan that it has “much to lose” by harbouring terrorists and reminded that there is nothing like good terrorist and bad terrorist. To counter this Pakistan National Assembly passed a resolution alleging that these statements by US President and his senior officials were hostile and threatening.
Earlier, Pakistan had showed its arrogance by cancelling at least three high profile meetings with senior American officials, including a visit of Pakistan Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif to the US to meet Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.
However, in a new twist and as a big win for India this time in Xiamen, the joint declaration of BRICS today condemned Pakistani state sponsored terror groups such as Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammad and the Haqqani network, coming directly at the doorstep of Pakistan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi further called for joint action on terrorism. On PM Modi’s agenda terror and trade are on top in his scheduled meeting with Chinese President Xi, a strong ally of Pakistan. India under the leadership of PM Modi seems to be tightening the noose around Pakistani Terror groups and their funding agencies such as ISI. It may be noted that this meeting gains significance as it is first one post the two month long Doklam standoff between two mighty armies of their respective countries.
Recently, Gen Musharraf put the Pakistani establishment to shame when he responded in a press interview that the international fugitive Dawood Ibrahim is stationed in Pakistan, whereas the Pakistani stand is that it does not have any such information. Contrary to this Indian Government has always been giving out exact details of fugitive’s movements and activities.
Pakistani establishment is fire fighting for the repercussions that may arise due to these international forums going against their state policies and state sponsored terror groups. This will not only alienate Pakistani establishment but also result in loss of credibility leading into isolation.
